Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site

Discovery Days 2008

 

The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site are holding a series of "Discovery Days" to highlight the heritage of the valley and surrounding areas. A wide range of activities to suit all interests and abilities are being staged over a 10-day period.

Saturday 25th October – emphasis on Derby, Darley Abbey and Milford.

10am Walk around Milford with Heather Eaton. Finish 12.30. Maximum number: 15.
10am Duffield to Belper walk with Geoff Errington. Finish 1pm to catch train back. A 4 mile walk with a steady climb over the Chevin hillside following the ancient Portway along the ridge of the Derwent Valley, eventually dropping down into the historic town of Belper. Max: 20.
10am Silk Mill model railway and steam engine operating. Finish 5pm.
10am St Mary’s Bridge Chapel, Derby open for public viewing. Closes 4pm.
10.30am Walk around Darley Abbey with Roy Hartle, starting at Mill View Gardens. Finish 12.30.
10.30am Street organ player Paddy Cooke in Belper town centre. Finish 12.30pm.
10.40am Derby Giants and Music outside Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
11am Joseph Wright Gallery Tour at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Finish 12 noon.
11am Live music at the Terrace Café, Darley Park. Get an overview of World Heritage Site activities and attractions whilst listening to a range of music from English Folk to Modern ‘Pop’. Finish 3pm.
2pm Nature walk around Darley Park, starting at Mill View Gardens. Finish 4pm. Max: 20.
2pm Walk to Dalley Farm from Strutt’s North Mill, Belper. Finish 5pm. Max: 20.
2.10pm Derby Giants and Music on Derby Market Place.
2.30pm Joseph Wright’s Derby tour from Derby TIC. Finish 4.30pm. Max: 20.

Sunday 26 th October – emphasis on Belper and Heage

10.30am History tour of Darley Park by Alan Bradwell, starting at Mill View Gardens. Finish 12 noon.
11.30am Morris dancing at Strutt Arms, Milford.
11.30am Belper River Gardens tour – looking at the gardens’ past and revealing plans for their future. Finish 12.30pm. Max: 25.
12 noon Bird Watching at Wyver Lane, Belper with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Finish 3.30pm. Max: 25. The bird hide at Wyver lane, usually permit only, will be open to the public. Telescopes will be available, along with Staff and volunteers to answer any wildlife questions. A return shuttle service via the Trust Land rover will be running between the North Mill and Wyver Lane reserve, approximately every 30 minutes from 12 noon, with the last journey down to the reserve at 3pm. Meet in the North Mill Car Park.
1pm Morris dancing at Hurt Arms, Ambergate
2pm Walk around Belper from North Mill, inc Old Baptist Chapel, Cedars, Pyms garden. Finish 4.30pm. Max: 20.
2pm Nature walk around Darley and Nutwood Nature Reserve. Finish 4pm. Max: 20. Join a team of natural history enthusiasts on a two-mile, 3.2 kilometre walk around this nature reserve by the River Derwent. Bring binoculars if you have them. The ground is rough underfoot and often muddy. Meet at the Mill View Gardens, next to the Toll Bridge in Darley Abbey village.
2pm Street organ player Paddy Cooke at Strutt’s North Mill, Belper. Finish 4pm.
2.30pm Morris dancing at Belper Market Place.

Monday 27 th October

10am Wonderful Water Voles - Family Activity with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Finishes 12 noon. Max: 25. Meet at the Gothic Warehouse. The session will be split in to 2 parts. The first will be indoors with an interactive presentation and activity, followed by time outside looking for water voles. Booking essential.
11am The Science of Silk activity at Derby Silk Mill. Come and discover how the silk moth helps us to produce wonderful silk items and make a silk moth of your own to take away. Suitable for all.  No need to book, just drop in anytime between 11am and 4pm.

9am Clearing overhanging trees along Cromford Canal with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, to reduce shading and leaf litter in the canal. Meet at Whatstandwell end, plenty of parking in Whatstandwell station car park. Cross bridge over railway to canal towpath and turn left. The team will be meeting in the small car parking area over the road next to the canal. Blue DWT Landrover should be visible there. Ring Sam Willis on Mondays and Fridays (01773 881188) or on 07732 168942 at other times, to check work task and availability of a lift. Lifts are usually available from East Mill in Belper or en route to the reserve. Don’t forget your water proofs, boots and a packed lunch. Finishes 4pm.

Thursday 30 th October

9am Clearing overhanging trees along Derwentside section of Cromford Canal with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, to reduce shading and leaf litter in the canal. Park in High Peak Junction car park and walk along canal towpath towards Whatstandwell. Cross the canal at the swing bridge and mid week team will be working along the towpath edge of the reserve. Ring Sam Willis on Mondays and Fridays (01773 881188) or on 07732 168942 at other times, to check work task and availability of a lift. Lifts are usually available from East Mill in Belper or en route to the reserve. Don’t forget your water proofs, boots and a packed lunch. Finishes 4pm.
11am Belper Poetry Trail from River Gardens (bring packed lunch). Finishes 2pm. Max: 20.

Friday 31 st October

7pm Pre-show storytelling event and Halloween costume competition in Derby Silk Mill before the performance of Macbeth at 7.30pm.

MACBETH by William Shakespeare.  Join the three weird sisters for a Halloween experience to remember, as they take you on a journey through the shadows and mist of the Silk Mill where Shakespeare's sinister and horrific tale unfolds around you.   Please note that this is a promenade performance through the Silk Mill, which is on two levels.
7.30pm The Search for Belper's lost Manor House . After the destruction of Duffield Castle the centre of administration for Duffield Frith moved to Belper and yet no-one knows where the manorial complex was situation. This talk by the Friends of Belper Parks will review the evidence including old references, recently discovered documents and archaeology to obtain an idea of what the manor house was like and where it was actually situated. The exhibition prepared for the Belper Parks Project will also be on display. The talk will be in St.John's Chapel, Belper. Max:50. Finishes 9.30pm.

10.30am Geoff Errington leads a station to station walk Cromford-Matlock Bath-Matlock (over High Tor) through Willersley Castle grounds via the locked gate onto the riverside footpath to Matlock Bath. This walk is about 4 miles. Finish 1pm. Max: 20

Monday 3 rd November

7pm Bob Betts, Managing Director of Smith’s, Clockmakers of Derby, to talk on the company and its links to the World Heritage Site, in the Unitarian Chapel, Belper. Finishes 8.30pm. Max:70.



Other activities still being investigated:

Children’s chocolate making workshop, I Should Cocoa, Strutt Street, Belper.

Good footwear and waterproofs are recommended for all walks. Walks are at an easy pace and accompanied children are welcome. The routes are carefully planned but you are responsible for your own safety. Leaders reserve the right to refuse anyone not suitably equipped. If you have any special needs, for example, as a result of a medical condition, let our leaders know at the start of the walk. All dogs should be on leads.
